@Background Pony #FF53
Silfoe already said this is a different universe, as we can see from the fact that here Celestia never managed to banish NMM in the first place… since she took control of the elements.
In the canon version she banished Celestia after returning from her own banishment.
This is a minor observation, and may be unintentional on Silfoe’s part, but notice that the Mare in the Moon looks nothing like it does in the “canonical” Nightmare Takeover timeline. It’s not only the wrong color, it’s on the wrong side:
But she didn’t take out her anger or hatred out on the population, who she blamed in the first place.
She even raises the sun every morning (even if the day is shorter at least it’s there)
@Spacefrog
Considering her reaction before the flash back when she looked at the moon with the evil grin, she probably plans to finish the job she started in the past and try to kill celestia.
So the elements did turn her, but did not finish the job.
They went in like a scalpel instead of nuking her.
The nightmare still exists, but she is no longer evil/angry/hateful
well yes, but to say the elements just nicked her is not doing them justice. she’s just really freaking powerful, so she can shrug off terrible wounds.
@Ice Blaze
She did awake in a similar manner to how Squall did at the beginning of disk 2 of FF8 though, thought difference, I admit, is that where Squall immediately questioned why he was unharmed, Luna apparently either does not notice or disregards her “fatal” head wound while it also almost instantly regenerates. Perhaps it is just OP alicorn healing powers.
Nonetheless, I find her whole ‘waking up after I apparently died’ to be somewhat similar to Squall’s own awakening. As much as I’d like to be vindicated with this theory of mine, I can see where I am probably just reaching.

Remember though, squall never had any marks, bandages, or blood on his body when he got impaled by crystal magic.
Here, night still has all the battle wounds and blood from the fight with her dumbass sister.
So, can she really be dead? The conscious mind tries to remove all manner of pain and suffering when you are on dying. If this was an illusion of the mind, she wouldn’t have been on the ground covered in blood and cuts, she’d have been standing tall with a completely clean body.
I am reminded of the “Squall’s Dead” theory for Final Fantasy VIII.
The entire Moonset universe is a dying dream from Nightmare/Luna’s point of view. While she believes she’s succeeded in overthrowing her sister, she’s actually stuck in this alternate reality her mind has created in that slim moment before she dies from the headshot the Elements dealt her.
Nightmare Moon is a parasite that has taken over Luna’s body.
Head-canon:
Luna’s body is mortally wounded and would die without Nightmare Moon.
Healing magic
Where’s all that harmony gone?
NMM in the future has mood swings… Element-induced mood swings.
As for this? First panel - ALMOST LUNA.
The last panel - wait, what’s that glow in her forehead?

The last two can be up for debate, honestly…

and who says it healed completely?
“That right there” is incredibly intriguing. Liking the direction Silfoe is taking this.
Which instantly heals, Nightmare Moon does not seem remotely perturbed by, and we see no signs of in the comic post-flashback.
@redweasel
notice how a good chunk of her face briefly returns to luna blue color. and this right here
she got a scratch through her entire brain and out the back of her head.

Still think this comic would be far more interesting without these flashbacks
EDIT: unless the below commenter’s badass theory turns out to be true. Then its pretty cool.

The stars are right.
The time is now.
And Sunbutt is pissed.
