Well she has the ‘mad scientist’s curse’, high general intelligence and low emotional intelligence.
 
And I don’t know. She’s got better, but personally I think she’s still got a way to go before she’d be a good formal role model for others.

I just had a thought, if playing with a kite with two people one of them had to stay to hold the kite and the other ran ahead/away from the kite holder to get distance for the lift then the holder would be alone after kite flew. Isn’t this somewhat similar to or a metaphor of Starlight’s fillhood trauma? I wonder if this was her destiny all along.

I wonder how Starlight Glimmer got her Cutie Mark of fallen star. Maybe she tried to move a star in the sky, but accidentally dropped it?

… And then she gets her cutie mark while flying her kite. Then that mark brings up memories of her abandonment. Kite flying then seems to lose it’s comfort, so she stops. her dark path is set from there.

As far as we know, after Sunburst’s departure to Canterlot she didn’t make any friends, but to her making a new friend would mean having to be separated from it again (after more cutie mark events) and she didn’t want to lose a friend again. 
Of course, growing up without friends would not have been so happy, but she wouldn’t be totally depressed either, maybe she likes kites so much because they made her happy, even when she didn’t have anypony else to share her joy with. 
Back to hard facts, she did get her cutie mark eventually, so this animation’s scenario looks totally plausible to me.

This fanart raises questions. She has no CM but her kite looks like her CM. And it also makes her childhood not look as bad as we were lead to believe.
