I’m increasingly convinced that the episodic seasonal nature of TV makes it fundamentally incompatible with cohesive narratives. The constant threat of cancellation means that the writers need to have contingencies to wrap up the whole show at the drop of a hat and can’t confidently open arcs in season 5 that they know cannot be resolved before the conclusion of season 7. Shows that do hold together are the lucky exception.
Which makes season 8-9 suck even more and makes them even more pointless in hindsight. This is why I suggest stopping at the end of season 7.
That makes their creative decisions for the final two seasons even more baffling.
The writers knew that the show would be ending back when they were still working on season 7.
That’s more damning on the part of the writers, then. If it were forced toy tie-ins for a canceled toy line, that would be the writers making the best of a bad demand. Did no one tell the writers that they expected S9 to be the final season until after the scripts for S8 were already finalized and sent to the VAs?
To be fair, even The Wire wasn’t immune from introducing an entirely new secondary cast in its final season.
Really? I always assumed that they included it as a mandate from Hasbro because they wanted to sell it as a playset.
That stuff came from the show first though, or at least the school did.
Which I find hard to believe considering the fact that we have things like Twilight’s castle and the School of Friendship.
My point was I don’t understand why people still demonize the show for that when there’s hardly been any toy tie-ins, or merchandise forced into the show.
Besides, let’s face it the show was always a toy commercial, and if they never adapted any toys, we wouldn’t have certain beloved characters like Cheerilee, or funding for the show itself.

There’s still a ton of things in this show that could have easily had become toys but didn’t. Some of the things people claim for toy plug didn’t even have toys.hell with the students clubhouse that episode aired shortly after the toy fair and it was nowhere to be seen
Wait a minute. Wasn’t that the whole reason behind Twilight’s castle and the School of Friendship, because Hasbro wanted to make toys out of them?
You make that sound like a bad thing. If anything, that should be counted as a good thing.
The show hasn’t had any toy tie-ins sense Season 4’s “Rainbow Power.” If anything, the show does a bad job of being an “evil toy commercial.”
