I honestly don’t envy Jim Miller. Dealing with the kinds of things he undoubtedly sees every day regarding the show and (certain) people’s opinions of it has to be exhausting. And yet he still manages (more often than not) to be civil about his responses.
 
He’s a much more patient man than I am, that’s for sure.

Except in the case of unskilled work, business usually has reason to get rid of an employee. Consider that employees are the most valuable asset that a company has, it costs money to fire and hire people, they don’t usually just throw away an asset that they have invested into for no reason. While there is a power difference it is there for a reason, without authority and power being used things dont get done, or if they do they are done slowly or incorrectly. If I gave my kids equal power and say to myself they would never finish thier dinner, never go to bed, and end up hurting accidentally themselves. Some power dynamics may not be inherently fair but are in place for good reason. As far as being snarky goes a person shouldn’t do that to any coworker on the basis of respect. If you can’t at least show respect to your boss it is a strong indication there will be little respect shown in almost every other aspect of the relevant work and interactions, so there would have to be a really good reason to keep that employee around. Disagreement is fine and acceptable but being an ass is not. Being able to be a team player and working with others is extremely important to productivity. And very few bosses in most salaried positions will fire an employee for an emergency situation provided they are told or at least have an explanation. Even most minimum wage jobs are really beyond forgiving for this even when it’s obvious that the employee os taking advantage of the situation. Not all employers are decent, some are greedy or have bad management, but to ascribe an inherent malice to the whole system because of a power imbalance is a bit of a stretch.

It gives all the power to the employer and none to the employee. It leaves employees at the mercy of an employer who they know could fire them at any time for no reason other than they happened to get snarky that one time. It creates an undercurrent of fear of the consequences if the boss’s demands aren’t met and you catch them in a bad mood. It reinforces the notion that employees are disposable assets rather than people. It creates a distrustful relationship between employer and employee (how do I know my boss won’t fire me because I didn’t come into work because I was in the middle of an emergency?).

Except that you dont understand that it helps everyone involved. It helps entrepreneurs get started, it helps business stay productive and adapt to change in the market, and it fosters the ability for companies to take a chance on employees that might not pan out because they know if it isn’t working they aren’t completely stuck with a problem employee. Essentially it helps drive economic growth and job creation. We can’t all sit on the dole for 40+ years afterall.

Well, the tradeoff is that my employer can’t up and fire me for any reason with absolutely no warning, as is the case with the at-will employment bollocks you Yanks insist on keeping. That seems like more than a fair tradeoff to me.

Texas, many of the things you comment on most posts are full of it and your grasp of the real world seems often distorted, so your comment isn’t going to bother me, that being said I do enjoy your artwork considerably. Spacefrog and conundrum I lived outside of the US for many years, unions are far worse in europe. For example, in ireland it is nearly impossible to get rid of a problem employee because of the various schemes and unions. And when they finally give a good reason to do so it takes months to go through the process. Thats why many of the workers are lazy, nothing happens quickly, and there is so little productivity and lack of competitive advantage. Additionally, the sheer amount of nepotism involved in getting in to most fields of work, such as bartending, is outrageous. That is if the government even allows you to enter into a field you are interested in due to the terrible and literally 4th grade level leaving cert scores being within acceptable range to study for that field. But hey the lack of junk mail, copious amount of bank holidays to pad time off, and ease of preparing taxes, even if they are horribly high, is a big bonus to the country so you’ve got that going for you which is nice.

Try looking outside America for how unions are supposed to work. (or unions that actually do work)  
I’m from Denmark and here unions work very hard to help the people paying them.
 
Very few jobs provide enough pay to actually force employers to change trough legal action, especially if said dispute is caused by unlawful firing or a work related accident.  
Unions help with that, both trough payment, counselling and having specialized lawyers.  
Some unions also pay for rehabilitation after injuries.
 
On top of that most unions here have consultants on staff to help with, career paths, insurance, courses and so on.
