To be honest, I find it less jarring than when the map called Starlight. Overall, not a fan of the map just calling anypony.

And then Spike became an airport runway light.

I see it as a natural progression. The purpose of the map missions is to spread friendship by solving problems that effect a wide range of individuals. It was never established that ONLY the Mane 6 could be sent, what was established was that the map would always select individuals best suited to whatever task it wanted accomplished.
 
Besides, Spike did get a throne from the start. We shouldn’t be surprised the map decided to use him eventually (even if the problem was caused by him, solving it made everyone better friends than before).
 
Further, the map missions were also focused on spreading friendship to races besides ponies and thus increasing the magic of friendship overall. And as the missions have progressed, so has the scope and potential targets the map can select to further its goals.

That’s what I said at first, in the first comment.

This season map episodes are so cheap. Not only people outside the Mane Six are called up, they are called to help people they already know in places they are know. These episodes would be easily rewritten without the map and everything would still work.
 
It feels like it was an afterthought. It’s like the episodes were already written, they noticed there was no map episodes and they decided to change some episodes in map episodes.

It’s a magic map. It’s likely that it could call anyone if it wanted.

Some one needs to give me a logical explanation of how the map was even able to call spike is not a pony, not one of the holders of the elements of harmony, nor did he tamper with the map like Starlight so how is this even possible?
