I always assumed that that Nightmare Moon took on the name herself and based it off the actual word to be more intimidating. (That and her love of puns. She told them “Stay back you foals” when “fools” could have sufficed just fine.)
 
That and since Luna has dreamwalking abilities, whose to say Nightmare Moon doesn’t either and is capable of getting revenge on the ponies that “wronged” her as they sleep?

i used the reverse image search and couldn’t find it. but it seems like it does mess up sometimes. :( doesn’t help that older images don’t seem to be tagged very well, so i probably couldn’t reliably search for this either.
