It helps that bats are mammals. I find a better image of bat wings is generally gotten from the flying fox (mega-bat).
the index and middle fingers of a bat’s wing are very close together anyway, so it does look like they have 4 fingers. the index finger is pretty vestigal, as far as wing structure goes, only barely apparent at the upper edge of the wing by the thumb claw.
if you focus at the tiny little “palm” of the wing in that photo, then look at the bottom of your left hand, thumb pointing up, it really conveys how bat wings are analagous to apelike hands.
Thank you! And yeah, I did try to add an extra finger in there, but it ended up looking a little wacky, so I stuck with the ye olde cartoon rule of four digits XD
Very good point. Makes it fit even better as a realistic Equestrian bat pony.
If I didn’t have tons of art for my bat pony stories already, I would consider getting a commission of some bat ponies done like this.
I think one finger short’s a really nice touch. literally everything with thumbs in the show only has 4 digits. supposedly because it’s “easier” to draw, but it’s very consistent.
and really there’s no reason there have to be 5 digits in reality, it just happened to evolve that way.
Thumbs look good too, as well as the membrane attaching down the pony’s back. Very nice work!
