Lord of the Empty Seat

And then there’s Yu-Gi-Oh, okay, where do I begin with this?

First off, the concept of death in the series is replaced with being sent to the Shadow Realm, because being sent to a void of Eternal suffering is apparently less horrible than straight up death.

But the biggest thing that bugs me about this is the fact that they change the Marik’s backstory from him having the inscription carved into his back with a knife… into having it tattooed on….

OK, TIME FOR TRIVIA:

It’s most likely that Marik’s tattoo was inflicted using a method that the Inuit people used; taking a needle and thread, dipping it in ink and sliding it through under the skin like you’re sewing. It leaves nice clean lines but it hurts so much! To prevent the ink from fading you need to get it quite deep under the epidermis. In amongst all the nerves. Seeing the level of detail in Marik’s back, it’s a safe bet that it would have taken days, possibly weeks to do it properly. Most likely with a handmade needle, much thicker than the one in your sewing kit, with rough jute thread to pick up the ink, and the ink itself would probably be some horrible concoction.

Sandpaper string.

Covered in caustic ink.

In the soft skin on your back.

For days.

They changed this (obviously without doing any research on it) because they thought it being a tattoo instead of a knife carving would be more child-friendly…

And all this was done to him when he was a very young boy.

YOU KNOW, FOR KIDS!!

A strange thing was the girl who fell down the stairs in the original and died but in the 4kids version the boys she humiliated were said to come back and beat her up into a coma. Isn’t that like the opposite of toning it down?

And rice balls were also edited there too.

In this scene, they become chocolate chip cookies.

At least it’s better then in the last years that 4kids handled the dub. At that point they were digitally replacing them with other things.

Some of these look especially bad in motion (like the bouncing sandwiches). The weird part is that there’s an early episode where Brock says “when you have rice you make rice balls” (not to be confused for another episode where he says “when you have dough you make doughnuts”).
