Yeah, this show is getting darker and more intense. There is no excuse if they don’t kill Chrysalis in Season 8, that would be lighter than threat of death (or possibly fate worse than thereof) for Fluttershy and Zecora.

I’d prefer to think it does kill the victim and the tree is, well, plants are technically “alive”, but still “inanimate”. Like, they die and their body becomes a tree. I’d think death would be preferable to being trapped forever like that. (There’s a show called Charmed where a demon gains immortality, and is later turned into a tree. In his case we know he is still alive, but in a state worse than death. In this case it was a magical spell that could potentially have been reversed. Valtor does something similar to Faragonda on Winx Club, except this is reversed)

Technically, I think those are warts coming out from her skin, which gives the appearance of tree growth
