I’ve lived in Europe and your system for dates is just as arbitrary. Think about the American system like this: there are 12 possible months so the number possibilities are 01-12. There are between 28 and 31 days in any given month and since the minimum 28 is larger than 12 and the day numbers run 01-31 it is perfectly logical to have days in the second column. Years have no upper limit but in the common calender is well beyond the other upper limits so this is the third. Basically our system is like an abacus. Just because you havr determined that days are shorter than months and months shorter than years doesn’t mean the other system is worse or even weird. If anything the metric system would be seen as strange and even stupid to someone from babylon (if you were to talk to one today) using a sexagesimal number system to measure.
