That’s perfectly fine to theorize, of course, and there’s nothing in the show to say or imply that that’s wrong to say that she didn’t intensely study magic, but a theory remains a theory, and I don’t think it’s a good idea to say “this character shouldn’t be able to do the thing they just did because in my headcanon they don’t have that ability”. There’s no canonical statement on how much or how little she studied magic, and it remains that way now – all we know is that she can, in fact, levitate herself. We don’t know what else she can and cannot do or how much she did or did not study to learn this skill, but we do know that evidently she can do this specific thing, because she has. Theories about her backstory should account for this fact.

Yeah, but even then I doubt they’d be able to truly recreate the Northern Stars.

She might not be getting Glimmerspeed while airborne, but it’s pretty clear Twilight’s parents didn’t give her any recessives in magical genetics. This just seals it.

Yeah I don’t think this is really enough to make up for anything.

I think what’s also worth noting here is that, in “The Cutie Remark”, Starlight only lifted herself while auto-levitating. Velvet here’s lifting herself, and her adult son (who’s, going by character models, is already big for a stallion), and her granddaughter, and those costumes while she’s at it – and with two adult children, there’s no way she’s below her middle age. Imagine her in her prime!

Considering that Twilight Velvet is modeled after G1 Twilight, who was a pretty impressive magic user in her generation, it shouldn’t be surprising she’s a powerful unicorn here. I was kind of hoping we’d see her teleport, as that was the original Twilight’s signature spell.
