I felt like he was an introduction for a bigger bad. The thing that corrupted Luna into NMM had the exact same MO, and clearly has a greater presence than its individual hosts.

I thought the Pony of Shadows was by far the lamest main villain to date honestly. Guy basically just goes through the whole Riku subplot of Kingdom Hearts in like five minutes, had very flimsy reasons for his turn to the dark side (and really, rejected by his friends or not, responding with, “I’m going to join up with some ill-defined abomination and destroy the world!” renders him not very sympathetic regardless), and he didn’t come off as actually menacing at all.
 
Granted it’d help if the story was even actually about him. First half is a fetch quest and the second most of it’s spent discussing how to stop him with no time devoted to actually showing WHY such drastic measures were needed to stop him.

It's bad. In a good way!
I don’t think this guy is some Umbrum type. No, he seemed almost identical to The Nightmare that possessed Luna. I’m shocked he wasn’t the same being. I was sure we were gonna see that he managed to leave some of himself behind that hid, and then as the Princesses looked for their master Starswirl at his last known location, it attached itself to her.
 
You know what screw it, that’s still my headcanon.
