Subsets of the furry fandom that are fanbases of furry franchises are distinct, but that’s largely because the fans choose one of the species from that certain franchise as theirs.
 
The “core” of the furry fandom is self-contained and basically a fandom of itself instead of media outside the fandom. Wolves, dragons and foxes have long since become the preferred species among these furries, so they keep being chosen. Most furries see any species other than these and large felines as strange.
 
Meanwhile, in the Bronydom, almost everyone is a pony (except for the occasional griffon, hippogriff, deer or what-have-you). Even the Movie didn’t start an influx of cats or even parrots (MLP-style, four-clawed, wingless parrots, anyway) in the Bronydom, no matter how sizzling hot Celaeno is, no matter what a hunka tomcat Capper may be.
 
Visit fan communities for different anthro media, and you’ll find different choices of fursonas yet again.
 
That said, another difference between the Bronydom and the rest of the furry fandom is that nowhere else did the creativity go as overboard as here.

Furry stallions vary in terms of fuckability, but furry mares I’ve often found rate highly on the furry cocksleeve scale. It’s also great that they get paired with dragon furs fairly occasionally as well. ;3

I became one because I like cartoons. Horses used to be pretty low on my fap species list.

I’ve been a furry before I became a Brony. In fact it’s BECAUSE I am a furry that I became a brony.(Make out whichever context out of that if you may)

But aren’t ponies sort of in that category since they are non-human animals?

Agreed, this fandom is pretty much a subset of the furry fandom. However, it is distinct to some degree.

If someone put a fleshlight in a Winnie the Pooh teddy, would that be furry?… Yes.
 
Ponies did it. You don’t need all these other animals. You were always closet furries when you started to clop.
