Starlight was also there to be the one who understood what it was like to lose your way and suggest to Twilight that Stygian could be saved. So she’s already got to involved in the narrative to a significant degree. (And there isn’t another reformed villain that’s easy to give that role to instead of her, even if you wanted to, so you can’t really say that part’s contrived without saying Stygian himself is.)

I can relate to Twilight; it’s really easy for someone like Twilight to look up to someone so much, they expect them to have all the answers. It really is possible to perceive someone else’s knowledge as superior to one’s own. I saw how Twilight could have stood up to Starswirl, but she was just so disappointed in how she was treating her.
 
I rather loved this scene!

I absolutely loved this moment. It kind of brought a tear to my eyes. Both girls have grown so much and it’s great to see that even the teacher can sometimes learn from the student. :)

In this case? No. They were all dealing with their own idols or people who had significance to them, although most prominently AJ, RD, and Rarity. As such, they might have been a bit unable to step back and tell Twilight that she was being too… iunno, focused on Starswirl.
 
Starlight was the only pony who was coming into the situation with a predominantly blank slate. Was that somewhat contrived? Yeah, probably. But I quite like Starlight as a character, so I don’t mind, and I don’t really expect that I can convince anyone who disagrees to my point of view. Each to their own, kind of thing - I know someone who feels that pony jumped the shark as soon as Discord was redeemed, for example.

The point of this episode was that Twilight met her idol, who it turns out was kind of a jerk to her, which caused her to doubt her own judgement and meekly follow along with his ideas, despite the fact that she should have known better.
 
Starlight’s role here wasn’t “saving the day” so much as it was gently reminding her “look Twilight you’re the princess of friendship, you don’t have to listen to this jerk just because he’s a famous wizard.”

I’ve gotta disagree with this part. Starlight had perfectly valid reasons to believe that Stygian was worth trying to save, and she understood the situation in a way nopony else did because she’d been the bad guy before.

You seem to think that if Starlight played a role–ANY important role, she automatically saves the day.
 
In Season 6 finale Starlight was rendered utterly useless and the whole plan actually failed hard since everybody got caught and Starlight had no backup plan whatsoever. Only by sheer dumb luck (which is Starlight’s true talent) that they even managed to completely turn the situation around.
 
Here, it was also from pure luck that Stygian was merely misunderstood and not completely evil or irreversibly consumed by the dark side.
 
No, Starlight didnt save the day, but we all know by now that she’s most probably the deuteragonist of the show, so she WILL play key roles in future heroics.
 
I think Twi and Starlight will be like Superman and Batman. Supes will be the one dishing out the final blow and saves everyone, but the Bats plays a critical role, arguably more important or exciting than punching the big bad.

I’m no Starlight fan, but even I think that doesn’t add up. Ultimately, Twilight saved the day pulling out Stygian and Starlight was only there for backup. Starlight’s role in this episode to remind Twilight to think before she engages the enemy; she’s not the deus ex machina role.
 
Every good master would always need a good student to remind him on the lessons he has taught; no master is perfect Hell, Twilight was shown to be a completely imperfect and flawed in the movie.
 
I will never understand the zeal for Starlight as she too is imperfect. But in this case, both Starlight and Twilight had to remind each other on the lessons they have learned in the past; Starlight, for this time at least, was not written as a des ex machina.
