Her feelings go awry when he’s brought up. Look at how excited she was when waiting at the train station. She was talking to random ponies about. Look how she couldn’t sleep when she was thinking about the stuff they were going to do. Then look at the spell she used to turn them into foals. She’s stuck in her childhood and did not want to move forward because he left her. She did terrible things in her past because of him. And when they were going to reunite, traumatic feelings emerged.
 
Her connection to him is deep but the show goes out of its way to avoid exposition and keep fans in the dark as to why.

This scene in the episode was ridiculously cute. This art of it is even cuter. It really does seem like she might have deeper feelings for Sunburst than even she realizes, ones that go beyond friendship. I wonder who Starlight would prefer if she had to choose someone as a partner: Sunburst or Trixie. At this point, its a close competition. She has clear affection for both. The show loves to tease StarlightxTrixie, but then they go and revisit her relationship with Sunburst in an episode like this.

Some folks over on Fimfic speculate that Starlight had a large part of her memory wiped, after fleeing Our Town but before her failed time travel ploy. She seems so fixated on losing Sunburst just because she can’t remember anything else that led to her developing the anti-cutie-mark philosophy and founding her town.

You could’ve left off the last two words of your post and it’d be just as accurate.

I hope some day, more details about their back story is explored about why she became a villain when he left. Because without any details it just looks like she’s plain crazy for him.

people say starlight turning sunburst and herself into kids was creepy, to me she was trying to recapture her lost foalhood that was taken from her when he left witch to me is kinda sweet because isn’t that what most people do when they meet old friends after alot of time has past?
