EDIT: wow what the hell.. I returned to an image that I already commented on 3 years ago and forgot about, and commented the same thing. I guess some things never change.
Canterlot High Big Mac seems to come off as the underdog protagonist of those high school TV shows. He’s just a guy who’s neither popular or in any clique, trying to make it through high school with the typical ups and downs of teenage life.
@bflatjeff
I’d considered that first, but I’d prefer to think it’s disappointment with the school lunches. Otherwise it suggests that he’s pretty miserable at school AND at home.
Besides, awful school lunches fit better with the “high school cliché” theme.
I must assume Mac is distraught by the poor quality of apples in the cafeteria. Just LOOK at those things! Tiny, stunted, discolored…
Meanwhile Joe’s just like, “Move along kid, you’re holding up the line.”
@FanOfMostEverything
Not even that so much (the pair have already broken the Cadance/Shining aspects).
Basically the idea is caricatures of stereotypical high school students using the ponies we know and love. Octavia the band geek, Vinyl the rebel, Big Mac the quiet nerd, etc.
Here’s what interpret.
Big Mac is sad because Granny Smith might be sick, injured, or possibly dead and that’s why donut joe is at the cafeteria instead of granny smith
I miss this series.

“No.”
“Horsefeathers.”
Agreed. Or maybe just, Man, I get enough of this at the farm! Can’t I get some Mac and cheese or something?

It’s more an expansion of that one IDW comic storyline parodying 80’s teen romantic comedies.
Well you know I thought it was an Alternate Universe were Equestria Girls is Ponified. I do fancy a bit of alternate universe.
Because she isn’t actually the lunch lady? This is an entirely different alternate universe from Equestria Girls.
Well why else would Granny be out of the school besides the things I listed
Or that Joe doesn’t know what he likes like Granny does.
Because apron!
