Truth be told, that’s the point I was aiming for in a roundabout, semi-satirical way. I still maintain that all those fans that stick the “edgy” label on anything darker (literally or figuratively) than usual for MLP would have done the same for Chrysalis and her brood if the designs had been leaked before the episode’s premier. How long that label would have stuck, I don’t know; complaints about Discord’s design faded fairly quickly after his episodes aired.
 
(On a side note: Does anyone else miss the days when Hasbro could actually keep a major plot twist like that a secret?)

Damaged would imply thats not supposed to be the way they naturally look, but it is.  
Just because some people think anything black is edgy doesn’t mean anything black is edgy, those peoples reasoning is a joke.  
That’s not tragic and you don’t even touch on her actual backstory with the dragon n stuff.  
So because some people mock anything with a horn and wings as an alicorn somehow that means she is an alicorn, so your reasoning for why chrysalis is edgy is because some people have thought processes on the same level as a soggy piece of cardboard.
 
Someone stupidly throwing around the term edgy at any character that is black etc is to be disregarded as a liar and a scoundrel, Paul.
 
NMM is edgy because of her backstory of being jealous of her sister which eventually made her go all “wake me up inside”  
At least that was the original source a later addition to this was the Tantabus episode where it is revealed that luna:  
Created a parasite to infest her dreams and torment herself to punish herself for what she did to equestria, jesus christ that got dark
 
Which is why she’s edgier than Tempest who did go all “my friends backstabed me” for a really dumb reason (read the book on her backstory for that) but that’s where it stops, her motivations from that point on is to fix her horn, it’s not some crusade against all ponies because her friends abondoned her.
 
As for chrysy? She’s a selfish bug queen who need no diplomacy and attacked a foreign nations capital city.  
Why? because “my subjects are more important than theirs.”  
I mean you could have a better case for calling the storm king edgy with his ”Tempest get me the pony magic so i can get a storm so everyone fears me” which is literally his motivation to attack equestria.
 
Oh yeah before i forget, edge doesn’t mean bad despite those potatoes that throw around edgy like an insult at anything they dont like, “ew black and red, edgy!” Such solid argumentation.

You do see those holes and gaps all over her body and horn, right?  
More specifically in regards to color, she’s black. I’ve yet to see a black OC that wasn’t derided as “edgy” unless it was obviously a joke OC.  
Tragic backstory: Forced to invade Equestria in an attempt to provide food for her children.  
And I’d love to see any pony or pony-like OC with wings and a horn that isn’t mocked for being an alicorn.
 
Face it: the only reason Chrysalis and the changelings aren’t lumped in with “LOLedge” characters is because they took the fandom by surprise and won us over before anyone had a chance to think things through.

I think you confuse edgy with originality.

And no, she’s not an alicorn, having wings and a horn isn’t all there is to being an alicorn, She’s an entirely different species.
