It’s fair enough. But case can be made that it’s at least creative to go out the way to use a different race than “standard” ones. And the “apprentice” just felt as original as “Twilights/other mane 6’s best friend/sister/relative”. As for outsider, it’s not really misunderstood, it’s just different views. And you can only be so nice to someone if they are slightly hostile towards you xd (just projecting my dislike of Sunbutt on my OCs because why not xd)
The “misunderstood outsider” routine coupled with a dragon/pony hybrid could in theory be argued to be just as cringy though.
