Never knew it was based on something, but it’s not the first reference in a Nintendo game.
In fact. in “EarthBound” the Happy Happiest cult that you encounter in the game is actually based on a real violent cult from Japan that was based in a dairy farm, (this is the only area in the game with a cow NPC) and the leader of said IRL cult usually wore a blue outfit.
Oh ok.
It’s an old 1977 horror movie. A girl and some of her friends go to visit her aunt, but the house starts eating them one by one. The scene in question that inspired the piano in Mario 64 is when a girl was playing a piano to calm the others down, only for the piano to start eating her.
