Context is key, if someone said “listen here idiot” compared to “listen here fuckface” and “listen here knave”. Being called an idiot is rude but contextually isn’t currently actually a swear word and no one would take particular chargrin to it. Naturally the second one in the context would cause offense as its purpose in the current language is an offensive word, and the last one at one point in history would have also been bad but in the CONTEXT of the modern world it means nothing, all words change over time, to focus on the pasts context is silly, the past shouldn’t define how we sort words today. Consider the roots, but don’t be bound by them, that’s not a good thing for languages.
Language changes with time and calling “idiot” an ableist slur in this day and age is a stretch and a half if you ask me. Tumblr may be correct in its less than pleasant origins but they’re no less stupid for whining about it being used these days in my opinion.
At one point in time, “idiot” literally was the term for someone with severe retardation. So for once, tumblr wasn’t out of their fucking minds.
Yes, I’m fully aware idiot was tossed out by the medical profession.
No, I don’t like saying that tumblr may have been somehow correct.
It’s like those people on Tumblr that call the word “idiot” an “ableist slur”. It’s fucking mental.
