It’s because “gay” has come to be mostly used to refer to gay males, (likely due to “lesbian” being typically used for the female equivalent)(I think even “homosexual” or “homo” is somewhat in the same boat, actually). So yes, while “gay” technically means homosexual for either gender, most people come to identify it as meaning homosexual male, hence the confusion when its used with the broader meaning.

Lesbians reffers to homosexual females, Gay could reffer to either homosexual males or homosexual females.
