This was a fun, relatively quick piece. I’m not entirely sure how it ended up on derpi before I uploaded it, but whatever! It’s all good.

Honestly, given that this makes her unequal, should she just be left to collect cobwebs? Equality is Starlight’s vision!
Obviously Tempest has the right to TRY to fix herself. No one here is denying that. However, there’s always the chance that she’ll fail.

I honestly think the both of you make some pretty good points.
Just because someone else doesn’t think it can or should happen, doesn’t mean it can’t or shouldn’t. Cripples have a right to at least try to fix their bodies, and they can also show that sometimes the solution lies in less obvious places. Kissing up to the Storm King was never going to get Tempest her horn back, but maybe, just maybe, letting friends into her life will provide Tempest with a solution. And even if it doesn’t, it gives her friends a chance to show how much they care. And that’s the real gift.

Did no one ever tell you you can’t always get what you want? That was basically Tempest’s arc, besides the obvious “let friendship into your heart.”

Not to mention magic in Equestria can turn you into an alicorn. Doesn’t happen often, but if magic can do that, why can’t it fix a broken horn?
Though seeing the trouble Twily and Glimmer had regrowing Rarity’s hair, the reason magic isn’t used for everyday injuries might be because body-altering magic can be unpredictable. The spell you cast to fix that broken wing could turn it into a bat wing, or a tentacle, or cause its feathers to fall off.
So, trying to use magic to fix Tempest’s horn could have any number of unpredictable outcomes. But using magic to create a horn prosthetic seems like a more practical way of at least patching up the wound, even if it isn’t full-on healing it.
At any rate, I still like the idea of a Crystal Heart-given replacement horn for Tempest and possibly a coltfriend (or marefriend, if conservatives wouldn’t throw a byayfest about something as harmless as same-gender romance).

She never really lost her magic. She still had the capacity to create fireworks, which, as her name implies, is probably what her cutie mark (whatever it may be) is all about.
Also, yes, you can’t fix a lost arm by growing the sucker back, but you can get a robotic prosthetic connected and fixed back up, to help you fit in and seem more normal. You can get a non-robotic prosthetic leg and most people would probably think your leg is natural.
My reasoning for wanting her to have a horn back is more in line with wanting her to feel more comfortable about what she’s lost, moreso than restoring her actual capacity to use it. It’d still take training – like it does in the real world – to regain control of any of her magic and actively use it properly, or use it well enough to even be on par with other unicorns.
To me it feels tantamount to saying “She should remain a cripple to teach people that being a cripple is a detriment to your life so you should be careful” which hurts me, knowing my cousin who lost her leg in a car accident entirely outside of her control. It wasn’t exactly Tempest’s fault, she didn’t know the Spooky Scary Ghost Bear Of Doomtm was in that cave. Why should she be forced to live with the stump, permanently reminding her of that, making her regret her past? She obviously wanted it back, and I felt like a prosthetic patch-up would make the most sense. It’s not a Deus Ex Machina “Boop your horn is fixed”. She has to work on it, she has to expend effort to get it and time to learn it.
And we shouldn’t even try?
This’ll teach kids to be more careful about how they treat their bodies.
That’s how I feel too. It’s one of the reasons why I disagreed with other fans about her magically getting her organic horn back. If the doctors couldn’t magically fix Rainbow Dash’s wing, Derpy’s eyes, and other injured ponies we’ve seen in hospitals, it just doesn’t make sense for it to happen to Tempest. Plus I like that she’s still powerful without her horn.
I don’t really like the idea of Tempest getting her magic back. I’d rather her just get a prosthetic for the sake of decoration. Her not getting her magic back reminds us that there are certain traumas you can’t physically recover from.

From a biological point of view that makes no sense… but it’s a cartoon.
I think traces of the same compounds that make up magical crystals can be found in unicorn horns.
I thought they were made of keratin.
