Imagine if pegasi stopped flying, because it’s “rude” towards earth ponies and unicorns…
I imagine that they could get weaker by not using their abilities.
Not to mention, as To Change a Changeling pointed out, the changelings need to be able to defend themselves. They can’t do that effectively if they aren’t able to use their abilities.
It might be healthy for them to exercise these abilities. Like how it’s healthy for a bird to exercise its beak by tearing up wood.

It isn’t nice to sockpuppet on the internet, so it would be worse to do so in real life.
I would not be surprised if Thorax is unknowingly creating a bias against using their own natural abilities.
Which would NOT be good for the changelings as an independent species.
The underlings seem to consider it lying to themselves for something as simple as color, while Thor warns his student-ling to stay in her own form, as if it would be simply rude otherwise.
That is, they don’t like to?
They seem to have some developed some sort of complex about shapeshifting.
