Yeah, no character’s perfect. Frankly, flawed characters are better.
Yes, I find Sunset to be a highly entertaining character to watch. I’m still very much aware of the flaws in her character writing, but I think the way it’s presented, largely due the exceptional performance of Rebecca Shoichet, elevates her above said writing. There’s no such thing as a perfect character, after all.
I see.
Y’know, it’s funny to see a Sunset fan (you are one aren’t you?) criticise Sunset. Anytime I critique a character here, (even ones I like) people accuse me of hating them, or something. Heck, one time I said I found a humorous Rainbow Dash image funny, and got accused of being a “Dashie-hater.” I don’t get it.
Edited because: Fixed grammar
I was actually talking about the recent series, not the movie shorts, those were pretty good.
I dunno, Sunset’s science short wasn’t so bland. (Though, admittedly science seems more like Twilight’s thing. Granted, they didn’t introduce Glasses Twi’ yet.) And Sunset’s song was nice.
The other characters were pretty good in the shorts, and it was nice seeing the human versions of characters like the Flim Flam Brothers.
Not yet, I probably will have to wait ’till it comes to Netflix.
It’s what I really liked about the specials and shorts, it gave the rest of the cast a chance to shine. I also hated the shorts because they really highlight how bland Sunset’s character is when she’s not center stage. I’m really hoping Forgotten Friendship is going to be a trend in the right direction.
Have you seen it yet?
I kinda wish they did more animated shorts, or did an episodic series for EqG just so other characters besides Sunset, and Glasses Twi’ could get some focus.
Though, I suppose we already have the Pony show for the other characters, still it’d be nice to learn more about their human counterparts.
Thanks for proving my point, Sunset takes up so much screen time, and robs all the other characters of agency (except Sci-Twi on occasion) that no other character matters and nobody cares about them. For what is supposed to be an ensemble cast, that’s pretty bad writing.
And Wally might be better than Juniper or Gaia Everfree, but that’s not really saying that much.

Sunset Shimmer show, sighs
Bruh, the special is Sunset’s story.
Also, Sunset is the heart and soul of EG, without her, who really cares about EG by now? Which the same can’t be said for Starlight (still and always will be a supporting character. leaks)…Humane 6 having no important role as their memories being removed while Trixie is willing to believe her, they probably won’t as all they remember are the bad parts (ruined their friendship, etc…) of hers.
And many agree Wallflower is the
2ndbest EG villain since The Dazzlings.Edited
@Supes
That’s nice to hear. I’m not really into EQG myself but I might give this one a watch.
She is, but she also likes herself quite a lot, so it’s only logical ;)
Yeah, I think the EqG series focuses too much on Sunset, and Glasses Twi’. (Though, honestly I prefer Glasses Twi’, more adorkable.) I wish they did more official shorts, or an episode series so the other Mane 6 can have some spotlight.
It also reuses the same tropes too much, as you said.
I kinda prefer characters with flaws too, and it’s nice to hear that.
@Supes
That’s saying something if you liked it. :P
Well, isn’t Trixie a bad girl kinda? lol
I’ll fully back this post up (well maybe not fully because I like movies 2 and 3 more still), and this should be saying something to some people out there :>
At least now I can make jokes about Sunset being the copycat for once. But the most important thing to take away from this is that Trixie is totally into “bad girls”.
It is easily the best EQG has ever been, only held back by the usual EQG failings, The Sunset Shimmer Show, the “main cast” having almost no role and being reduced to batteries/cheerleaders/damsels, disappointing antagonist that gets redeemed at the end who we’ll probably never see again, plot hole riddled lore, you know the usual problems that just seem to be baked into the EQG formula. On first view, I gave it an 8.5/10, which is the highest rating of any of the “movies”.
But, after a follow up watch, I have to bump that up to a 9/10 for one important reason: Nick Confalone fixes
Sunset Shimmer. She has real flaws, real character traits beyond being pleasant or the character struggle of the week, actual charisma and realistic emotions. It actually feels like I’m watching a good version(as in good guy, not good quality) of EQG1 Sunset, instead of the character replacement we got in the other movies. Massive props to Nick Confalone, this is the Sunset Shimmer I’ve always wanted to see.
Not yet, to be honest, I’m not too into “Equestria Girls.”
Did you watch today’s special?
Or I guess it was yesterday’s.

Indeed. Though, Sunset & Trixie don’t get along well, (or at least in “Rainbow Rocks”) which further makes the image odd.
I’m curious if this image was made with character-bias intent, like those Sonic comic images fan-edited to replace Princess Sally with Amy Rose.
>powerful unicorn feels rejected/neglected and turns to evil.
>redeemed by Twilight Sparkle.
>makes her first friend on her own in Trixie.
Kinda makes all those Glimmer/Shimmer arguments seem a little silly, doesn’t it?
