To your credit, I would have given up on him the moment he damaged himself.
Even when you’re lucky the game finds a way to make you lose.
I think my worst loss in this game was the time I got a masochistic highwayman in the weald, he moved to first rank, damaged himself, took all the hits and refused to be healed twice after entering death door.
I did my best to save him but everything failed, to quote the Simpsons, it was like watching a monkey swallow a handgrenade.

Yes, and a very good one at that. The more hit he takes, the more powerful he become, he can easily reach max deathblow resistance and get a +100% strength at death door if equiped with a martyr’seal. And there is also the huge heal and bleed.
