That is the one thing that surprised me about this group: no overt magic-wielder (other than the passive innate abilities of each species).
 
Interesting that three of them start out with some superiority biases (Yona, Gallus, Smolder) but those subside pretty quickly when they get to know each other.
 
I don’t think they are going to match up 1:1 personality-wise with any of the mane 6 either. Each has an interesting blend of quirks and traits.

Seems the only one here who can be considered remotely as a magic user is Ocellus.  
Unless you count dragon flames.

I think they’re either all teenagers or preteens from 12 to 16 yrs of age in human equivalence (I have no idea how dragons and changelings age though).

Actually to be risen one way or the other, there will always the tendencies to be “anders” (another one). It’s quite logical, because no one can grow and never question about his/her destiny. Yeah, many succumb to the fact that they need to compromise with the established ways. But in your hearts you feel the need to be different. And so the students 6 does. Don’t follow the rules. Appreciate to be different!

I really think you’re focusing on the wrong thing here. The important thing is that they’re six people from six different worlds who find common ground and become friends. That’s the better takeaway.

I’m not saying they need to be flawless, but generally not being the type to run away from home is a good start for a role model. That’s a terrible choice, and could lead to bad messages for children.

I think they’d be great main characters. They’re certainly not immediately presented as flawless paragons of good behavior to start with, but their flaws make them relatable. And clearly their ongoing story would involve them learning from their mistakes and growing as people, so kids watching would grow along with them. I don’t see the problem.

Yes but these particular kids would be role models to children if they were main characters. So no, they would NOT be a good choice for the main characters of the next gen. Granted, we can already gather they aren’t, so it’s a moot point.

Queen Novo’s court was an undersea hideaway that had essentially abandoned the outside world. I doubt foreign policy was a huge concern in their education system.
 

 
Again: They. Are. Kids. Kids make plenty of mistakes and dumb decisions, but they also have lots of room to grow.

Also, if you’re claiming they don’t have the agency to think through NOT doing things wrong, especially after the first bad choice would have gotten them separated, you’re making an amazing argument for them NOT being made into main characters.

 
Sorry, but kids simply do not think in those terms. They certainly knew they’d get in trouble if they were caught, but likely figured the worst that would happen is that they’d get grounded or something.
 
It’d be flat-out unrealistic if they actually thought about the consequences in terms of international politics, unless they had some sort of super-strict messed-up childhood where they had grown-up rules and worries forced into their heads from birth. And that’s very likely not the case, since they all seem pretty normal.
