Equestria’s rock farms are one of the biggest suppliers to the dragon kingdom of Auscalia. Being dragons, they consume large amounts and pay very well for high volume.  
That sack of bits he’s paying Trixie with, while large by other standards, is small compared to what her cut of the profits would normally be.  
this is now my headcanon.

I’m pretty sure she bought the thing to get back at Twilight in the first place. However ever since she got the amulet, her revenge just became more twisted.
 
Also, the term “Alicorn” is now canon. It used to be just a furry and fan term for “Winged Unicorn.”

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

“I was thinking that Trixie was saving all of her money throughout season 2 after her “secret” was revealed in the Gabby Gums episode. I mean why else would it take her entire season to come back again.”
 
Because it took her 2 years(maybe) to find the artifact of mass destruction, and she only went after Twilight once she became evil.
