Easy: this is not a review but a parody (and a cruel one, BTW). That is supposed to be a humor page, of course it’s hater bullshit. As an artist, do you take, for instance, Curt Sibling’s art at face value? Surely not. Well, these guys are to García Ferré and his fans what Curt Sibling is to the hardcore bronies.
 
Check, for instance the article where another character from the García Ferré universe, Trapito, entered while inebriated the Richard Dean Anderson fan convention and he was burned only to be rescued by Adam West fans XD
 
To make a long story short, they’re not seriously comparing Ico to Spirit, they’re just plainly hating on Ico for the sake of doing it: it’s a wicked parody, don’t take is as a serious review. Enjoy the adventures of Ico, Preciosa and Larguirucho and forget the silly comparison.  
BTW, pretty sure that Ico, with its limatiations, is better than Spirit (I dunno, I’ve only seen parts of the former and the later never tickled my fancy, but I know myself).
 
I’m very happy to take part in this discussions about Ico, learning quite a lot of trivia.

AFAIK, García Ferré was a controversial man, and it depends on the sources. This is what I recollected so far, and I hope someone corrects me if I’m getting it wrong: he was in very good terms with the military Junta (the genocidal dictator Videla and him went yachting together often), but, over time, he became critical of it, if not vocally, with the content of his films, like Ico, that were seen by the Junta as a way to teach children the fundamentals of freedom, and this got him on trouble.  
However, his collaboration with the Videla government hasn’t been forgotten, and he has lots of detractors up to date, even with a hilarious - but very wild - site attacking him. Check it if you want (and understand Spanish, of course).

Ico, el caballito valiente (meaning Ico, the brave little horse, also referred to as Ico, the Brave Horse) is a 1987 Argentine animated film based on a franchise that dates back to the 1970s.
 
History:
 
It started as a TV series in 1981, before it was adapted into a feature film directed by Manuel García Ferré and written by Ines Geldstein. After a 3-to-5 year production period, the movie was completed in 1983[3] and due to be premiered at the International Kids Film Festival in Portugal that year.
 
Its release in Argentina was prohibited by the military junta because its composer was Mikis Theodorakis (famous for Zorba) who was active in politics against dictatorial governments. It was not until 4 years later, on the 9th July 1987, that the movie was officially released in Argentina by an independent distributor. In the same year, at the International Moscow Film Festival it won the award for Best Animated Movie.

It is easily one of the deepest and most somber animated films ever made,  
and the dialogue is often introspective and clever.  
If you can handle incredibly bittersweet and slightly depressing fantasy with beautiful art,

I feel the design of the equines from Ico are very MLP-like,  
though maybe more like G1 or G2 toys than G4’s FIM.

I’m neutral in the Ico/Amalthea/Unico issue. No MLP related, for sure, but it’s always funny to find those old fellas here.

And ‘The Last Unicorn’ has 110, but pretty much all those uploads also include some obvious MLP reference in them,  
or are simply art pieces, not direct animation.
 
And this is the only Ico animation currently on derpi, I think.  
So, I do hope the mods allow this to stay, but we’ll see.

This is a good movie and nice animation, but,  
if this doesn’t get removed by mods,  
due to the ‘must be tangibly related to MLP’ rule,
 
Then I expect to be able to post my Last Unicorn gifs again  
without them removed, too.
 
Granted, I tried posting them a couple years ago,  
so maybe the rules are more relaxed now,  
and anything with equines is cool?
