Yeah, that’s what I was thinking too.  
Not only a failure to stay in character (Rarity would at least have been more polite, and would likely have accepted the flowers even if she might have felt weird about it - though most likely she’d think it was sweet of Spike and would happily have displayed some flowers given by a friend)  
But also, obviously, a failure to take advantage of a chance to gather love.  
Even if they thought it was a trap or something - like, if they think Pinkie is trying to lure them into acting out of character with the temptation of ‘love’ energy - they should have been more subtle about it.

Awkward indeed.
