I’ve been operating under the assumption that “the fall” is literal- the robots are tossed down a deep pit when they are replaced.

A robot could exist down there without sentience. The newer models are quite advanced pieces of technology. Ponies basically went into mass produced artificial intelligence. Guess it went wrong, like in almost any fictional AI story this far.

in a way, joule is lucky she became sentient after the fall. before the fall, sentience could have been met with confusion, misunderstanding and ignorance, with sentent robos coming to the natural conclusion that they must be broken, with no idea how to fix themselves.
 
but now, sentience is absolutely vital because it’s necessary to adapt one’s behavior to rapidly changing and unpredictable circumstances. sentience being a profound awareness of the world and the self would help a robo make decisions that weren’t part of its pre-written programming.
