Well, it worked in one story, where a cheapskate Scottish lord wanted a super-strong kelpie to help build his castle. As soon as the kelpie was done the lord removed the bridle. At which point the kelpie cursed his entire family –

Sair back and sair banes
hauling the Laird o’ Morphies stanes.
Nae Laird o’ Morphie will ever thrive
sae lang as the Kelpie is alive!

The story is that if you toss a bridle on a kelpie they have to obey you. Just an idea for anyone who wants to go swimming with the Scottish murderponies without being dinner.
