If I remember right Twilight was the one who attacked first so it would be self-defense. Either way the lasers never hit so there’s no way to know what effects they would have had and there was no indication that being hit by one would’ve been lethal, for all we know it would’ve done nothing more than stun Twilight. Point being: we don’t know enough to say what Starlight was trying to do for certain.
Why was she shooting lasers at twilight during the season 5 finale?

She didn’t try to kill Twilight and none of what you just said has anything to do with the point I was making. Also I said that Tempest was a child.

I can understand starlight being upset with that. But responding by enslaving a village and warming time, harming a child, trying to kill twilight etc. That is just being a psychopath. Also tempest was also a child when a bear mauled her.
except maybe better story context and being an all around better characters like tempest.

In this case it doesn’t matter because regardless of the circumstances both Starlight and Tempest lost friends when they were fillies and didn’t try to make new ones which is ultimately what led to them becoming villains. Nothing can change that.

That wasn’t implied. But I may as well point out that a child’s mind is more fragile than an adult’s. When Starlight lost Sunburst it could very easily have left an impact on her mind that could be seen as mental trauma in a way.

They reason why she lost her friends doesn’t matter here. The fact is she lost her friends and didn’t attempt to make new ones, just like Starlight. There are similarities between their backstories and the fact that there are also differences doesn’t change that.
it was friend loss AND mental trauma. Starlight only got half of that.
and because her friends were dicks that didn’t want to hang out with a kid they got crippled.
In the end though, the reason she became a villain was because she lost her friends, just like Starlight.
