It’s less specific than you might think. When I first started watching the show and I saw all the bright colors and rainbow horses and I knew they weren’t going to show blood I had the headcanon that maybe the ponies blood is also multicolored.
It just makes sense with the general theme to assume the ponies are made of candy (e.g. Rarity marshmallow) and rainbows (remember rainbow factory?). And gore is just something very basic that comes in all shapes and sizes.

Yeah, but it’s such a strange and specific thing that I wouldn’t have expected more than maybe 40 pictures.
Popularity? There have only been 184 images over the course of 6 years. Most aren’t well received.

EDIT Why the hell is “candy gore” such a popular thing? Its existence doesn’t surprise but its popularity does.
