Here’s the backstory behind these two:
Not long after they got married Maud got pregnant and gave birth to a small, but healthy little filly. They named her Beryl Pie. Couple months later, Mud Briar got called away on a camping trip by some old compadres. Reason why Maud didn’t go with their baby is because they (minus Mud Briar) wanted it to be a guys trip. (Reason Mud Briar agreed to go in the first place is because he couldn’t resist the temptation of seeing new wood, hence new sticks that would make interesting specimens).
When they arrived at the woods, it was a hot day and haven’t rained in weeks. And one of them didn’t do a good enough job putting out the campfire. Embers flew, tree branches ignite, and a forest fire started while they were still asleep. By the time they woke up and ran to escape the forest fire, Mud Briar collapsed, unconscious, and even when they carried him out of the woods they sadly discovered that he wasn’t breathing. He had died from inhaling too much smoke!
Maud didn’t take the news of her husband’s death very well. It had gone to the point where she could barely look at her daughter. She had even asked her sister’s if one of them could adopt Beryl! Pinkie Pie knew this was the grief talking, so she invited Maud on a trip to refresh her mind. Applejack had recently invited Pinkie to the Appleloosa Rodeo, so Pinkie felt like it was destiny to bring Maud along as well. At the Rodeo, it was only the Rodeo Clowns’ performance that made her smile lightly. After the Rodeo Pinkie asked Maud if it had cheered her up. Maud just responded that she doesn’t think she’ll ever cheer up and asked Pinkie to let her be alone for a while…
That evening, she enters the Saloon and orders some Cider. Then she was approached by Trouble Shoes who recognized her in the audience. He had noticed that among all the laughing ponies, she had a rather somber face and asked if she was ok. She told him about how her husband died and now she has to take care of her daughter without her own father. Trouble Shoes sympathized, comfort, and counseled her as she she took big gulps of cider ‘till she got drunk. Then in her drunken state, she pressured Trouble Shoes to drink with her and well…
…
The next morning Maud woke up in a hay bed in a barn. Hungover, she walked out of the barn, not realizing that behind her lay Trouble Shoes. And when he woke up, she wasn’t there and has no clue of what happened last night. Neither of them did.
A few more weeks past, and Maud hasn’t been feeling well, and so she paid a visit to the doctor. Hearing the symptoms, he deduced that she - in fact - is pregnant!
The Pie family had a meeting about who made Maud pregnant sense before his death, Mud Briar and Maud hadn’t - well - “done it” since Beryl was born. Maud thought back to when she had cider and was being counseled by a stallion by the name of “Trouble Shoes”. She couldn’t remember what happened that night, but couldn’t deny the possibility and the fact that was the only time she could’ve gotten impregnated. After telling this to her sisters, they decided to round up Trouble Shoes and gave him the hardcore interrogation in a dimly lit room and everything! Poor Trouble Shoes was scared silly! But after hearing the story and the one-sided face-off with Pinkie, Trouble Shoes says he’ll take responsibility.
Since then, Trouble Shoes had been taking care of Maud and help her raise Beryl which took a lot of stress off of Maud’s shoulders. Of course, Pinkie was there to keep an eye on Trouble Shoes to make sure he wasn’t doing any funny business. But the only funny things he did were pure accidental as he tripped on furniture, have flower pots and Maud’s rock collection drop on his head, etc. Luckily, Pinkie’s Pinkie Sense kicked in and made sure there weren’t any serious damages and no harm came to either Maud, Beryl, and Trouble Shoes himself, which they all were grateful for. Pinkie Pie eventually warmed up to Trouble Shoes, as did Maud.
And when Maud gave birth to a strong baby colt. Trouble Shoes just melted as he held his son. As for Beryl, she just adored her baby half-brother!
Couple years later, Maud and Trouble Shoes fondness for each other grew to love and they got married.
And as Beryl grew up, she was influenced by her aunt Pinkie and became a cheerful, happy, and hyperactive mare who would ramble all day about Geology and Literature! But of course, like her biological father, she would always correct others when they make verbal or pronunciation errors. She’s also smaller than the average mare, and loves referring to Boulder as her little brother.
