That’s a good way of seeing them, especially since I think someone working on the show (Ian I think) compared them with Namekians.

I see the Gems as, basically, female Namekians: Namekians are “asexual” males, some of them butt-ugly like the Guru, Muri, Slug or Piccolo Sr. and some others quite handsome like Piccolo Jr., Nail and the adult Dende.
 
Gems are quite the same but in female form: all the Crystal Gems range from cute - even Ruby is (are) kind of huggable - to downright sexy, and I find the Diamonds to be very good-looking. Then we have Jasper and the major fusions, who look from homely to downright grotesque. But they’re still asexual by nature.

Which is how some of the foreign dubs censor it. Some of them straight up made Ruby a dude (now they have the choice to make “him” a crossdresser at the wedding, make her female, or cut the wedding out).

Funnily enough, the only lesbians in Steven Universe they actually bother to confirm onscreen, that someone like you couldn’t be in denial about, is about one of the characters that might as well be a guy from both personality and appearance. The only way you would think it’s a girl by the fact they use female pronouns(and they thrown in a curve ball in their wedding in the latest episode, by making the guyish one be in a dress and girly one in a tux, because the creators have a fetish for girls in tuxes)
 
I do give you SU though, but they are the exception that prove the rule. When it happened, everyone made a big deal out of it for it being the first. You think a regular show like MLP, that doesn’t tackle on such controversy topics(SU did cover many controversy topics that you normally wouldn’t see in a kids show), would do it first?  
You want it to compare to a front runner?

It’s also why I see the show as having a different Canon than the comics.
 
Basically, IDW is the group that makes the comics… Though the only extremely hinted at couple in the comics are Scootaloo’s Aunts.

Possibly? They’re more open to having same sex couples in the comics and storybooks because they don’t have as wide of an audience compared to their TV series and they don’t have to worry about their show getting censored or banned in a particular country.
 
Also bisexuality exists so even if Bon Bon and Lyra were a full blown obvious canon couple, you’re free to ship either of them with whomever you want.

Sounds about right. I’m not complaining because I can ship Lyra and Bon Bon with stallions that way.

Actually, unlike The Legend of Korra and Adventure Time, Steven Universe had a lesbian couple and a few other LGBT characters revealed before the show ended (the show is still ongoing in fact). (And to bring up my earlier point, Steven Universe did get censored in a few countries because of this and I think Russia stopped airing it completely.)

And yeah, some people insist it because of subtext. And calling gay couples “friends” is an example of it. Case in point, they did that in Hey Arnold. The teacher, Mr. Simmons is gay but they had him call his boyfriend his “friend” in the show. Another example of this would be Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy in Batman: The Animated series. The creators confirmed that the two of them would have romantic/sexual flings together whenever Harley wasn’t with the Joker and the only way they could get that by in the show was through subtle context.

I’m talking about those two, and Steven Universe (which is targeted towards children). Also, SU apparently didn’t wait until the series finale for a lesbian couple to come into play, I haven’t watched it but that’s what I’ve heard.

Most of the stuff about Lyra and Bon Bon show them as being close friends, while people seem to think they’re more than friends despite saying they’re best friends.
 
(If Lyra said “Our relationship is over if you can’t be bothered to tell me you’re a spy” or something like that instead of using Best Friends I’d be more likely to see them as a couple… But she didn’t, so I just see them as very close friends who are like sisters to each other.)

You know, when you make such a bold statement, it would be wise to at least post one or two examples.  
Are you talking about Adventure time or Legend of Korra, both shows that are for teenagers and only do it in the very last episode? (and even then people still claimed until the comics that Legend of Korra wasn’t gay)

In the comics. Last time I checked, they didn’t in any of their TV shows (at least not explicitly). We’re talking TV shows.
