That’s… not even remotely true. They almost died because one Ice Archer messed up and all the spellcasters in the audience were disabled. Nothing to do with Spike.
 
Please tell me: What did Spike do that directly led to the danger?

Let me preface this by saying that Spike is, and has been for a long time, my favorite character on the show.
 
The creator of this piece does have a point though.
 
In the early seasons of the show it’s clear Spike was intended as a the “comic relief” character. Someone to either fall victim to pratfalls or, just as often if not more so, play the straight man to whoever was acting craziest at the time (see almost every Twilight Sparkle freak-out ever but especially “Lesson Zero” and “Feeling Pinkie Keen”). Even in episodes more focused on him early on he was meant to be the “example” for the show’s moral. The kid who does something bad and/or messes up and is then made to learn a lesson due to karma or the other characters.
 
The difference between Spike and your usual “Example Character” is that with him the lessons stick. At least, they stick as well as they do for any character of the show.
 
Spike was comic relief. He was a fall-man for crazy antics so the writers could work in a cheap laugh or teach an easy lesson by having him mess up. That doesn’t mean that’s all he is. Spike has grown up alongside the ponies, and they’ve made it clear that the Mane Six as well as many others consider him a valued and much-loved friend. And that, despite all appearances that characters like Twilight and Rarity take advantage of him, Spike loves helping them. He’s always loved helping others. His seflessness is a huge defining part of his character and the only reason it doesn’t get noted more often is because he doesn’t get a gaudy piece of jewelry that turns it into a magic laser.
 
To Wayneponeth, Spike isn’t a victim of abuse. He’s meant to be a source of easy comedy for when the writers need to make someone laugh. I agree having a character solely to be abused would be a horrible message but the amount of love and care the other characters show to Spike far outweighs any amount of alleged “Spikeabuse” he might go through.
 
To the creator, you’re wrong plain and simple. You took one note from a well-developed character and blew it all out of proportion. Maybe to trigger drama like this, maybe just because you really can’t tell any better, but it doesn’t change the fact that you’re wrong. Spike is not useless. Twilight and the others have argued against views like that in episodes before. Even if the little dragon had never had a single episode focused around him, even if we ignore every episode that stars him, you’d still see him right by their side doing what he loves to do most: Helping his friends.
 
In a show that focuses on “The Magic of Friendship” what could send a more powerful message then that?

Maybe your right during King Sombra but throwing a fragile 1000 year old relic which is the only thing that can stop a snow storm and defeating King Sombra out of the window. Even for me, I think twice before doing that.
 
Also, who knew throwing your half dead wife saves the entire Crystal empire.

I don’t think having a character built to be abused is very positive for kids. This is not a depressing, edgy teenage fanfiction where a character is only written because the writer is a masochist y’know.

also even if she had made friends, during the battle against discord spike wouldn’t be there to break her out of the funk and find the solution(in a timely manor at least)

I look back at the Crystal Empire thing. He really didn’t do much of note. In fact, he did the least of any of the characters.
 
You could have gotten the same result tossing the heart out and Cadence catching it while it was in freefall.

Spike surely proved his worth often enough to deserve respect.

Spike did saves the Crystal empire twice during the King sombra and the Equestria games. Without his dragon fire the ice came from the cloud would crash on top of the ponies below maybe most of them survive it, and the others not so lucky.  
If his not there twilight still be in King Sombra trap and the crystal heart just laying on the floor and that would lead to war like in season 5 finale
