According to Zecora, if phoenix feathers can cause deafness, that means those feathers are laced with ototoxins (chemicals that cause hearing loss)
 
Based on scince, those feathers may had evolved to produce natural antibiotics against infection (or obtained from antibiotic fungi/plants chewed up by the phoenix), which in turn also act as ototoxins against predators that came into contact with them (e.g. gentamycin, tobramycin, streptomycin)
