What was the “something”?
I don’t think it’s too bad, (despite the androgynous designs, probably intentional, as Gems technically have no gender) but the overused “upper lip” half circle detail seems off-putting to me kinda. Other shows like “Craig og the Creek” seem to use it alot too, oftentimes without a lower lip detail.
Edited
Steven Universe’s artstyle is unappealing to me, but that is just my opinion D:
As much as I respect John K.‘s art, (despite his unfortunate apparent crimes) it’s a li’l ironic of him to accuse other animators of being blinded by nostalgia for ‘60s cartoons, considering he himself hates almost every cartoon that doesn’t emulate the retro animation styles he himself was influenced by.
Heck, John K. hates every cartoon he worked on that wasn’t his own personal creation. (Like “Heathcliff” where he was a character designer.)
@Chuy Ryu
The animeesque fad kinda got old too after awhile, and kinda turned some people off anime, and animeesque shows. Though, animesque wasn’t just in the 2000s, as they were actually common in the ’80s & ’90s too, as many American cartoons had overseas animation done in Japan like the first season of the original TMNT cartoon, Tiny Toons, several Disney Afternoon shows, the original Inspector Gadget, Heathcliff, and others. (Oddly, the intro to the “Super Mario World” show was done in Japan too, and as a result looked better then the actual show.)
As a result, those shows actually had some animesque moments too, like some of the facial expressions, and tropes like “cross-popping veins.”

i miss tom and jerry.
And Where almost every American, Canadian and French cartoon had something Asian in it or was a martial arts themed one to go with it
a lot of the hate comes from the thundercats new art style being butt-fugly as well.

LOL the internet is awash in insecure dudes who define themselves by their “knowledge” of nerd culture trivia without actually knowing what they’re talking about.
This won’t ever be a thing, no matter how desperately you wish otherwise.
The funny thing is that the trm CalArts was created by John K because he hated the visuals of The Iron Giant
According to him, this is CalArts:
@TexasUberAlles
If it makes you feel any better, I don’t call it the “CalArts style” what I call it, shouldn’t be reproduced in text. Even if I’m not interested in watching Thundercats Roar myself, I’m sure some people out there will enjoy it.

This is some well-roasted comedy right here.
Okay professor.
@TexasUberAlles
You ever heard of a comedy roast?
Use of ~calarts style~ as an insult started among easily-offended manchildren on 4chan and Tumblr as an easy label to slap on cartoons they don’t like; it doesn’t matter to them that for the most part it isn’t even accurate– Steven Universe is a frequent target, for example, even though Rebecca Sugar studied at SVA in New York– they just want a hashtaggable label that’s short enough to say with a sneer.
Come on, jump on the butt hurt bandwagon
Funny doesn’t hurt the butt.
@MorphinBrony
yes
good
@Background Pony #EA44
I drew her as a joke but couldn’t bring myself to not finish it.

@sumbozo
Honestly not surprised.

Come on, jump on the butt hurt bandwagon.
@sumbozo
It’s hilarious how many fake geek boys are whining about ~le calarts style~ right now because they’re only capable of speaking in buzzwords and catchphrases and can’t be arsed to check Wikipedia or something to see that most of the things they’re whining about have nothing to do with CalArts.
Also, I don’t think most people really “miss” pedophiles who get run out of town on a rail.
