Really, actually great building was done. And it made plenty of sense, even though magic was involved, that’s practically a miracle for this series.

I love them both for somewhat different reasons, not sure if I can say one wins over the other. The movie was a visual feast that also (assuming any of it gets referenced in the series) greatly expanded the world of MLP. It also had a lot of heart. But admittedly it did suffer from there being so many characters and its story suffered a bit as well.
 
This finale, as you noted, juggled the characters pretty well (albeit some of the pillars did and said very little, we had their introduction episodes to make up for that), and I would say the story was overall stronger and the lore amazing. I honestly didn’t expect us to get the origin of the Elements of Harmony explained before the end of the series.

I’ve have to admit it: I’m sorry Meghan, but I think Haber won this round. While I loved the Movie, my only problem with it was that AJ and Fluttershy got close to no role in it compared not only to the other Mane 6 and Spike, but also all the guest character (althought Fluttershy still got one of the funniest moments of the Movie. XD) and considering it was a 99 minutes movie, I think they could have managed them better IMO. Haber instead managed to somehow handling so well 15. FUCKING. CHARACTERS. In just 44 minutes of episode. I can’t believe he managed to do that! That’s quite an accomplishment you know, he should write it in his resumer.

No no what I basically meant was that they have the original creators of the elements and now the elements themselves to aid protecting the realm from its various corners so that in my opinion makes double the protection but I get what you mean though

Makes me wonder: How will the presence of the Pillars change certain aspects of Season 8. Will we get personal episodes with them? Will they assist with future threats (aka Chrissy)? This is high octane fanfic fuel in its purest form.

Actually its still effectively 6. The Pillars planted the seeds that became the Elements/Tree of Harmony, but they don’t have the level of power the elements possess (the tree grew and evolved over time to become the spirit of Equestria itself) and can’t use the elements themselves as they are attuned to the Mane 6.

Which one: The Elements or the Pillars? Or all of them?

Elements of Harmony-modern day Justice League/Avengers  
Pillars of Equestria-WW2-era Justice Society/Invaders

There were so many characters crammed into single setpieces in Part 2. Two sets of Element Bearers, plus two extra magic users and one sidekick per set (Spike/Stygian). The storyboarders and animators deserve major props for all they put into it.
