Nah, I think you said it well. She was definately overrated, especially in the older days of the fandom. But despite that, I still like her too.

Canonically, only Spike has one true love in the main cast which is surely why browniez ship them two the most. If Rarity somehow found out about all this shipping, she would probably find it ridiculous. I mean, she still loves Spike. Just not the way the shippers think.

We haven’t gotten specific canon ages for the main cast, at least not until rather recently. All we know right now is Spike is canonically a teenager given his molt-puberty thing. But the Mane 6 are likely to be adults given how we’ve seen Applejack in the Where the Apple Lies flashback and how Cutie Marks are more or less treated like a rite of passage or puberty sort of thing among young ponies.
 
But before that, we got some pretty ambiguous ages for them. Back in the earlier seasons, when Faust was running the show, she said she deliberately made their ages rather vague and she even gave them a wide guessing ranges for their ages (with them being teens as a possibility). So some fans of the ship may have liked the ship before knowing all this or because they were misinformed about their ages.
