As in the fans just base these off almost nothing.

Even tragedies were handled pretty well in a kid friendly way in some of those old cartoons. You don’t see tragedies in kids’ shows anymore.
 
I don’t know what went wrong with humanity upon entering the 21st century, but its stupid.

Orphans, robberies, mild violence, and other subtle flaws and complications were staples in cartoons, especially action ones, back in my days(the 90s).
 
I don’t know what turned parents/adults into pussies nowadays. It is as if everything today is sanitized to hell.
 
“You can’t have this”. “You can’t have that”. “That is too harsh or complicated for kids to understand”.

Disney absolutely LOVES orphans, or at least killing off one parent. I knew that Tiana’s dad in Princess and the Frog was doomed the moment it showed how great he was.
 
But, for some reason, MLP never wants to touch on the issue. Lauren Faust said she considered Applejack’s parents to be dead (though maybe they’d change that in Apple Family Reunion this season, but I doubt it). Technically we might have two CMC members who are orphans.
 
When Rainbow Dash says she’ll “take Scootaloo under her wing” that could mean a few different things… Maybe she’s actually adopting her, or it could just be that she’ll start giving her lessons in flying and being awesome.

There’s nothing harsh about orphan in children show. In Lion King, we even saw a character suddenly became an orphan.

I hope to see more Scootaloo and RD interaction. The comic already did it. It’ll help both characters in the long run.

To me, it does seem to enforce that she literally has no one else in her life besides Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle, hence why she latched onto Rainbow Dash as a role model and potential sororal figure.
 
The show doesn’t make her situation explicit, though, so, there’s no saying one way or the other.

But I guess being an only child is strange in Equestria, seeing as how almost all the main characters have a sibling. Except the two Pegasi.

As the others have said, she doesn’t have a sister. She may not have any siblings at all. But there’s a difference between “Scootaloo the only child” and “Scootalook the ward of the state”, and I don’t think they really gave us anything to go on concerning her parents.

It seems to more hint that she doesn’t have a sister.
