FWIW (and I know it’s pedantic) real Pones get stuff in their hooves, or rather the frog of ‘em, usually in the form of stones and mud. Hence why it’s a good idea to run a hoof pick over them and get the junk out, especially before & after riding.

Don’t let the giant metal spike concern you: it’s perfectly safe to use, as long as you know what you’re doing. A human analog would be scrubbing between and under your toes, I suppose, but our feet are a lot more squishy than hooves.
 
Come to think of it, I wonder why we don’t see hoof picks in the show. Heck, we’ve seen nail files more!
