I would try to pull out the fact that along with the more familiar eastern and northern expansion from what is now Nepal and India of Buddhist influence, to countries such as Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, South Korea, and Japan over successive centuries, there was an expansion westward for a time to places such as what is now Pakistan and Afghanistan and there was a meeting, though brief in the grand scheme of things, between Greek and Indian cultures during and after the time of Alexander the Great, who conquered Egypt, leading to art such as Vajrapani replaced by Herakles that theoretically Egyptians might have had contact with Buddhist philosophy, but it was probably just mystical shorthand as far as the animators and writers were concerned as far as I currently know.

All I can say is that seated meditation in the lotus position isn’t natural to most people who haven’t done it. Granted, there are other positions for seated meditation and this is perhaps another example of bipedalism, or at least the imitation of human poses as opposed to the more pony-like poses.

They just wanted shorthand for “meditation”, so most are familiar with this position when it comes to that word.
