For me, my theory used to be that Equestria was hit with a mass coronal ejectulation from the sun that disrupted the Equestrian mana field, much like the electromagnetic field around the Earth in the alternate universe

I’m assuming this is when they are suspicious of Lord Tirek being responsible, but can’t send a detachment of Royal Guards to Tartarus to check on him with the magic acting up as they need to stay and maintain calm, but know that whoever is responsible will be facing severe punishment for their actions.
