No, Kirins are the descendants of eastern unicorns tribes mating with eastern dragons. The large hybrid population and inter-breeding made it possible to create its own subspecies.

Simply convergent depictions of each species’ “dark side”. Darkness/fire/pointy things are scary to little kids, so naturally “evil” creatures would be depicted as having those traits.

To me they seem to be represented as most akin to ponies, in particular they (or at least Autumn Blaze) uses the “anypony” type of speech, making it sound like the kirins consider themselves a type of pony (though without cutie marks).

Yeah.. no the mythology does not call them pony/dragon hybrids. It calls them chimerical due to how many different creatures it takes the features of. Unicorns, Dragons, Ox, Deer, Horse, or Carp are all creatures brought up involving it. When infact the original Kirins were giraffes, heck Kirin = Giraffe in Japanese. Now on to the whole “Moths have fur” thing… they don’t. It’s not fur. It’s scales, or chitin, a keratinous material that makes up the exoskeletons of Arthropods. It is more like feather than fur.
Besides the fact “Black with curved horn” also describes King Sombra, The details between the Changedlings and the Kirin can also be pointed at the Ponies as well, also there are plenty of male Kirin, look at the eyes on Kirin to tell their gender as fur pattern is not limited. Male voices are also heard during the curing scene.

I can’t upvote this so I’ll just re-share it. Kirin are NOT dragon/pony hybrids in any sense, they’re just a creature identified as similar to EASTERN dragons, and the best part about this episode is that it will hopefully kill the misuse of Kirin in the fandom…. eventually.

This is kind of a stretch, to be honest. While there are some similarities between the nirik and the changelings, I’d hardly call them “identical”; one shoots literal fire from its body while the other has holes in its legs and resembles an insect. Also, the heavy emphasis on individuality found in the kirin design is shared many different species, not just the reformed changelings. Those include: ponies, hippogriffs, dragons, griffons, etc.

The flames of the Nirik are clearly actual fire, though. Recall the village was burned down once because everyone was in Nirik form.

I believe Kirins/Niriks are a split off from Eastern Unicorns and Dragons. It akso explsins their regional and cultural differences as well. In universe I mean. What if being most isolationists and having eastern asain motifs with a affinity for natural beauty and unity.

I don’t really think this theory works out all that well you also have to consider the fact that Changelings are more insect-like (the shiny exoskeletons and bug like wings) while Kirins are obviously mammals (only mammals have fur and they have those big manes).

I mean Big Ruler seems to happen with a lot of equine species in MLP. Obviously the first big example are the alicorns, then of course Chrysalis and Thorax, but the recently introduced Hippogriffs own Queen Novo is larger than the other ones though not by much. Plus more high class or noble unicorns are often taller and more slender. It’s probably just an easy way to show nobility. Putting the character literally above everyone around them. Wasn’t the chief of the buffalo tribe even bigger than the others?
