Twilight Sparkle: It’s nice that you have somepony to show you dragon culture. But are you sure that’s what Sludge is doing?
Spike: What do you mean?
Twilight Sparkle: Well, taking over your room, making a mess of things…
Spike: [scoffs] That is dragon culture.
Twilight Sparkle: You never acted like that.
Spike: That’s because you raised me. Now I finally have a chance to see how I’m supposed to be.
Twilight Sparkle: I don’t think you’re supposed to be any different than who you are.
Spike: Maybe you just don’t like that I have a real parent now.
[cracking]
Twilight Sparkle: That’s not true! I’m glad Sludge is here. I-I just wish he wasn’t such a—
Spike: Dragon? Of all ponies, I can’t believe you would have a problem with that.
Twilight Sparkle: [sighs]
Spike: What do you mean?

Spike: Dragon? Of all ponies, I can’t believe you would have a problem with that.
Twilight Sparkle: [sighs]
Spike : “Check your privilege!”
Smoldur might not have contradicted herself. Let’s not forget that between her, Spike, and Ember they’re trying to open doors to get along with the other races of Equestria more.
What Sludge did may be a perfect example of how dragons do currently act in Equestria, but it’s the old way. Smoldur is trying to be part of the new way.
“I saw an opportunity and I took it! That’s what dragons do!”
And he’s right.
Dragon culture is an “every man (well, dragon) by himself” culture. What Sludge was doing is very much in-tune with dragon culture.
Twilight is an outsider to that culture, so she can’t possibly understand.
Not really. Dragon parents toss their kids out of the house to try and survive on their own at first Molt; they don’t try living off of them. Not that it’s much better that way.
OP is right…considering what we’ve seen of dragon culture so far, it lines up perfectly with what Sludge was doing.
Twilight has no frame of reference because she’s a Pony.
And yeah, I know Smolder said “that’s not how dragons act”, but consider what Smolder said about how dragons treat pre-teen dragons who go through the Molt, consider her Dragon Christmas story. Smolder is contradicting herself.
Uh, Spike’s not a griffon. Dragons at least managed to hold a leader.
