The reason Spike is a buttmonkey to magic is because he frequently is the antithesis to it.
 
He’s a realist and focuses on the simple facts of day to day life that one frequently overlooks.
 
That, and I imagine that actual Dragon magic works a LOT differently to Pony magic.

He’s loyal to Twilight, not to all of the mane 6, he’s been with her since birth, there’s a difference there.

Spike is so loyal the element of loyalty didn’t allow its forced use. After all he was unwilling because of the element itself. Were the element to contradict his reluctance it would contradict itself.  
He has the power, he can’t use it if he feels it goes against the principle itself.

Not only was he worthy of the element, it also didn’t allow him it’s power.

I think the reason it didn’t work for him is OBVIOUSLY THE FUCKING PLOT WOULDN’T ALLOW IT, but for 2 other reasons. 1st: All 6 elements wouldn’t work because the mane 6 was corrupted and only wanted to defeat Discord to be done with each other, not to protect the world. 2nd : this was when Spike was still learning and maturing so at the TIME he might have not been worthy of an element. But I almost guarantee you if he tossed it on now, that motherfucker would spring to life

True, except he can’t accept it, because his worried that he’ll replace rainbow dash.

I think Spike could actually be a stand-in for Loyalty. It’s just that everyone except him and Twilight was corrupted at the time.
 
Shadow Play did have him go off with Rainbow Dash, after all.

Well for what I’ve learned form thor 3 and Spider-Man homecoming(minor spoilers), || Thor’s hammer was only a tool of what he can really do, and Peter Parker learned that a true hero is himself, which is why doesn’t need his suit, because he learn this qoute the hard way form Tony stark: if you’re nothing without the suit then you, shouldn’t have it”.|| those movies can implied mlp as well, perfect example is season 4, in premier it showed that the only way to save Equestria from the vines, was by wisely giving back the elements to the tree of harmony, then in the finale, it showed that the magic was within themselves all along, the magic of friendship, which is why they can still do great things even without the elements.
