Implying young men don’t take advantage of and/or do harm to young women, or that men do that to women their age, or that women don’t do that to men.  
Some people are scum. Evil knows no age or gender. But why criminalizing a healthy love to half assedly prevent the unhealthy ones?  
I am of the mindset that it is better to let ten criminals go to prevent a single innocent to be punished. Because punishing even a single innocent is actually atrocious and unacceptable.  
I know what I say is controversial in our current authoritarian landscape. My own family find it detestable that I prefer to not sacrifice innocent people. But the truth must be always spoken. Otherwise innocents will suffer.

Good points you have. But, then you have to consider all the messed up people who wish to take advantage of,  
and/or do harm to young girls. Because we’re more wary of people like that nowadays, I don’t think things will ever go back to anything even close to how it was.

The short life span thing is a lie. IRL, Back in ancient times if you lived past your tenth year, you would live at least until the age of seventy. However there is a reason why it was normal for women to marry young… They last fertile for less time than men, and men take some time before being economically stable and therefore proper fathers.  
Since parents had a higher relevance when choosing a spouse, most women would marry an older, but economically stable man rather than a poor but young one.  
Considering the current single mother epidemic in the West… I suppose we are the ones making a mistake.
