Ocellus, you can’t just ask somepony why they are black.

Personally, I think it was a bad choice on Hasbro/DHX’s part to change the design of the changelings when they reformed…implying that you can tell good from evil just by appearance.  
It would have been more interesting to see them struggle to befriend their neighbors and find their place in the regional community while keeping the ‘scary look’.
 
Of course, Hasbro is in the business of selling plastic crap and the colorful changelings will probably sell much better.

I’ve always imagined that the originals (proto-lings?) would be physically and magically stronger, and would act as a defense force for the hive. While the new (neo-lings?) would be the cultural heart and soul.

I wouldn’t be opposed to that. I like the idea of old and new Changelings interacting with each other. (In fact, had I worked on the show, I would have had the new hive be a mix of both old and new Changelings as well as given Chrysalis her own smaller hive.)

inb4 Chrysalis does that

I’d like to see her run into some old style changelings who are equally confused as to her appearance.
