Yes! Yes! It was a rare occasion when Christmas was copied not by the stupid dragging a completely unjustified Santa Claus in the absence of actual Christianity, but has a normal basis inside the world. And now on the day of national unity, when ponies strengthen their friendship on their own without a single supernatural hint, magical deer appear just to make the holiday a little more like a prototype.

I mean, this is hardly the first incompatibility between comics deer and show deer.  
 
Regardless, one could argue that these are technically reindeer rather than temperate forest deer – the Christmas theme and the running in midair and all that make that seem very likely. While that’s a pretty pedantic distinction it’s also the sort of distinction that could parallel that between, say, zebras and ponies or griffons and hippogriffs – and the zebras (well, the zebra) and the griffons come (mostly) in regular animal colors whereas the ponies and hippogriffs come in various pastel shades.

The deer in the comics had normal colors. The show just had to give them pony coloring.

… you know, by this point I’d all but written off sapient deer from ever showing up. I am not at all upset to have been wrong!

Suggested on another image: this would be a point they could use Patton Oswald’s family (which we know they recorded stuff for a half-year ago). Oswald would just likely be the oldest, putting on a fake granny accent.
